The road to noise reduction: how modern cars achieve a quiet journey

Nowadays, as the quest for comfort and luxury grows ever greater, car manufacturers are constantly exploring new methods to improve the driving experience. One of the main causes of discomfort while travelling is noise. Be it from the engine, the wind, the road or other cars, noise can be intrusive and annoying. But how do modern cars achieve a quiet journey? Experts from Tsaki will answer this question.

The technology of active noise suppression

Active noise cancellation represents a significant advance in driving comfort. This method is based on the principle of "antiphase", which is used to reduce or even eliminate certain sound waves.

For this technology to work, microphones are placed at strategic locations inside the car's cabin. These microphones 'listen' to internal noise - this could be engine noise, the movement of wheels on the road or even noise from surrounding cars. Once unwanted sound waves are detected, the system quickly processes this data and generates new sound waves that are the exact opposite of the unwanted ones. When these two sound waves collide, they cancel each other out, resulting in a significant reduction or even elimination of noise.

Insulation and materials used in the compartment

One of the main challenges engineers face when designing cars is how to effectively insulate the cabin from the outside world. This includes choosing the right materials and insulation techniques.

  • Acoustic glass - many modern cars are now fitted with acoustic glass, which is specially treated to reflect and absorb sound before it penetrates the cabin;
  • heavy insulation materials - these materials are specifically designed to absorb and insulate noise. They are often placed in the floor, ceiling and walls of the vehicle;
  • rubber gaskets - car doors and windows are sealed with rubber gaskets to prevent outside noise from penetrating.

Aerodynamics is the science that studies the movement of air around and through objects. In relation to cars, good aerodynamics is important not only for optimising fuel efficiency but also for reducing driving noise. Modern cars use sophisticated and innovative design solutions to make sure that air flows smoothly around their surface and does not create unnecessary noise.

Optimising the shape of the car is a major part of the process. The smooth and rounded lines of the body help air to move unhindered, thus reducing air resistance. Details such as exterior mirrors, door handles and even the shape of the headlights also play a role in overall aerodynamic efficiency.

Furthermore, active noise cancelling technology is not just for cars. It is also used in other industries, such as aviation, to create a quieter and more pleasant environment for passengers.

What makes this technology really impressive is its ability to react almost instantly. The system can quickly analyse incoming sound waves and generate a real-time response. This means that even under changing conditions, such as acceleration or sudden deceleration, the technology continues to provide a quiet and calm ride.
