Anyone who self maintains their car needs to know how much oil to put in the engine. The need for a complete oil change occurs regularly and sometimes needs to be topped up to the desired level. The amount of lubricant that is added is individual for each engine.

How to check the oil level

In order to check the oil level in the engine, you must be familiar with carrying out this activity in advance. The engine is equipped with a special hole into which a metal rod with a plastic handle and a gasket is inserted to seal. This is the oil dipstick. It is immersed in the lubricant in the crankcase. Slits are made in the bottom of the rod so that grease marks and two level control marks remain on it. To measure the level, the following steps must be performed:

• Park the vehicle on a level surface, without a slope. Otherwise, the measured level will be displayed incorrectly due to the tilt of the vehicle;
• pull the dipstick out of its socket and wipe it with a dry cloth. You can use rags or disposable wipes, which you should always have in your vehicle. The important thing is that the cleaning material does not contain lint, lint and similar debris that can remain on the probe and get into the engine;
• insert the clean stick back in and after a short pause remove it;
• on the basis of the traces of lubricating fluid left on the dipstick, judge its level and decide whether to add a further quantity;
• for any engine, regardless of displacement, the mark must be midway between the 'min' and 'max' markings.
   

How much oil to put in the engine

Each car manufacturer develops engines according to the goals and preferences of their customers. Therefore, the answer to the question will be individual for each engine. To find out what initial amount to pour, you need to look in the manual. But at the same time, keep in mind that further oil fillings must be adjusted for the amount that remains in the engine after draining the crankcase contents. Usually it is 300 to 500 grams and accordingly you should fill less with the same amount.

In general, it is necessary to fill fluid based on engine volume. The exact recommendations are given by the manufacturer. Engines with a displacement of 1.8-2.4 liters use about 4 liters of oil in operation. When changing the oil, use the following algorithm to fill the system correctly:

• unscrew the oil fill cap and insert a funnel to prevent spillage on the engine. Start filling the initial volume of 3.5-3.8 litres;
• wait a few minutes until everything has drained into the crankcase of the cylinder block, and take the first level measurement with a dipstick;
• at low level it is necessary to fill a little (not more than 200 ml at a time) and check again;

You will have to repeat this operation until you achieve the desired result.
