When choosing a coolant for your car, you need to pay attention to various factors. Well-known brand, nice packaging, attractive price. Many even choose antifreeze by color, without paying attention to the composition and production technology. And certainly few people care about such a characteristic as density. But this is a mistake. It will not hurt to check it before pouring liquid into the system. Otherwise, you can not be sure that it is a quality product.
Among the mandatory information listed on the packaging of antifreeze are its basic indicators. These include:
This characteristic determines whether the fluid is suitable for your car, whether it freezes or boils in different situations. This indicator shows that the product contains acid or alcohol, salts. That is, how many mass fractions of a substance are dissolved in water. Since the composition of the coolant includes alcohol base, additives, colorants, etc., its density may not be the same as that of water.
The density of antifreeze is on average 1.10 grams per cubic centimetre. It ranges from 1,034 to 1,112 g/cc. In the first indicator the liquid will start to crystallize at -10 degrees Celsius, in the second at -20. Strangely enough, there are also antifreeze with average indicators - from 1.083 to 1.082 - they will provide protection up to minus 60-65 degrees Celsius. By comparison, the density of water is 0.9982 g/cm³. At first glance, the difference is small. But it will determine when and at what temperature the liquid poured into the cooling system will boil and freeze. Since the most important thing affected by the density of the coolant is its crystallization temperature, then if this indicator is insufficient or excessive, one may fear that the substance will fail in winter and freeze when it reaches the temperature limit.
If you do not have special instruments for measuring the density of antifreeze, you can simply conduct primitive experiments - try to freeze antifreeze. To do this, you need to pour a small amount of it into a plastic bottle and close it tightly. If the weather outside is cold, you can leave it there for an hour. During the warm season, you can use the freezer if the temperature inside it is regulated.
