Deionized water - properties and application?

Let's turn our attention to one of the interesting, but little-known types of liquids. What is deionized water, how does it differ from ordinary water, what properties does it have. Tsaki will answer these and many other questions related to deionized water.

We immediately note that it does not exist in nature - it is produced on an industrial scale. This is due to its main characteristic - the absence of impurities. In the natural environment, any H2O - even if it is crystal clear, odourless - is a mineral solution: with a greater or lesser concentration of salts and a certain number of micro-organisms.


Deionised water - what is it


It is a liquid from which all charged particles of impurities have been artificially removed. It is not just a residue, but the purest of the compounds of hydrogen and oxygen known to science: it consists of 99.9% H2O molecules. Due to the specifics of the production technology, it is also a desalted and demineralized solution, which limits its scope somewhat.

An important point is the absence of harmful micro-organisms - deionised water is cleansed of bacteria, but this does not mean that it is suitable for drinking.

 

Properties of deionised water


Basic Functions:

  • High resistivity - a characteristic indicator of the degree of impurity removal;
  • extremely low electrical conductivity due to the fact that the concentration of salts tends to zero;
  • maximum degree of purification - the already mentioned 99.9 per cent, smoothly resulting from the two previous parameters;
  • impressive chemical activity (due to which deionized water even has to be stored in a fluoroplastic container) - absorbs charged particles from air gases, acidic residues, metals;
  • universal solubility - absorbs all of the above (thus it gets contaminated).

Application of deionized water


Such a unique set of properties allows the use of deionized water in electronics - for washing microcircuits, semiconductors, printed circuit boards, since in this area it is particularly important to isolate the working surfaces and remove salt particles from them. In everyday life it is also common - to remove deposits from heating elements, which significantly extends the life of devices, as well as from glass and metals. In fact, it is the ideal cleaning agent.

It helps to quickly and cost-effectively clean the windows of shopping centres and multi-storey offices. Its advantage is that it handles this task on its own, without the need for soap or gel (forming a foam that also needs to be washed off afterwards). Particularly useful is its absolutely amazing absorbent effect - its flow absorbs dirt, dust, calcium and magnesium salts. Automotive systems are a separate case:

  • for the preparation of technical fluids;
  • dilution of antifreeze to the desired concentration;
  • production of electrolytes for batteries.

But these are not all the areas in which deionised water is used - its properties are much in demand in various fields.
