The job of the brake fluid is to transfer the pressure from the master cylinder to the wheel slave cylinders. That is, it is an important component in ensuring driver safety. Brake fluid is one of the most important fluids used in a car. Its level and quality directly affect driving safety. Many drivers, unfortunately, forget about it.
Inexperienced car owners think it's important to maintain proper brake fluid levels. However, they don't even think about replacing it completely. However, this position is completely wrong. This is primarily due to the hygroscopicity of the compounds. Water accumulated in the fluid deteriorates its original parameters. That is, it may boil at a lower temperature or freeze in the cold. Do not forget about the accumulation of wear products in the brake fluid, which also affect its properties. All this requires a complete replacement of the composition in the system.
Often, the replacement schedule suggested by the manufacturer is around 30 - 60 thousand km. mileage, which is about once every two years, and the presence of such an additional system as ABS in no way affects the frequency. And if the question concerns sports cars such as Lamborghini or Ferrari, then the brake fluid should be changed after 15 thousand km. because the speed limits of such cars are much higher. But such data are only indicative, because if the color of the fluid has changed (turbidity or sludge has appeared), then sometimes you need to change the brake fluid even earlier. Operating the vehicle with cloudy fluid or sludge in it can cause brake system malfunctions.
Therefore, in addition to mileage readings, a good indicator of the need to change brake fluid is its color. Although visual inspection is not the only way to monitor the condition. Special fluid testers are used in the service station to determine the percentage of moisture and show data on the need to replace the dashboard. Glycol-based brake fluid in the ideal ratio is recommended to be changed every 40,000 km. If you are using silicone based fluid then there may be completely different replacement frequency data which can be up to 5 years.
The first thing to do is check what type of brake fluid is recommended by the manufacturer and how much you need. The brake fluid must be fresh. It should not be more than a few years old. The packaging should be airtight - not only with a lid, but also with an extra aluminium or other protective cap. In the case of modern vehicles with advanced braking systems, and many premium vehicles, when changing the brake fluid it is necessary to connect the vehicle to a diagnostic computer using the appropriate software. Adding too much brake fluid in vehicles equipped with an ESP anti-skid system can paralyze your car.
