How often should I change my car's oil? | ТСАКИ ООД

How often should I change my car's oil?

Timely engine oil change is the most important component of long and trouble-free vehicle operation. However, many people carelessly ignore this and drive until the oil turns to tar. But this is a big mistake, as such a practice is a shortcut to engine failure and major repairs, which are accompanied by high material costs.

Why is oil necessary?

Oil is designed to reduce wear on engine components. After all, the operation of many of its parts is based on friction, which flattens the oil. Therefore, it is not recommended to allow the machine to sit for long periods of time. The reason is the oil leaks into the crankcase and the engine operation in the first minutes is almost "dry". In addition, the oil also acts as a coolant, together with the radiator and antifreeze, taking the heat away from the friction parts. The oil protects the engine parts from corrosion. This is very important because pistons, camshafts, valves and other parts work in very difficult conditions - these are high temperatures with large differences, friction, the influence of the products of fuel combustion, etc.

Oil ageing

This happens over time. This situation is characteristic of absolutely all internal combustion engines. With increasing mileage, the oil gradually oxidises, additives burn off and contaminants build up. All this leads to the fact that it becomes simply incapable of performing all functions effectively. Eventually, the period for changing the oil comes when the old one is drained from the engine, with all the impurities - then a new one is poured into the engine. Don't forget about the compulsory oil filter change though, because if you leave the old one in then the contamination will get into the clean lubricant.

Consequences of driving with old oil

This practice leads to disastrous results, which are characterized by the following unpleasant consequences:

  • engine overheating - the fact is that stagnant oil conducts heat much worse;
  • friction - over time, the oil liquefies, increasing the friction between parts and putting considerable strain on all components of the power unit. At best, this will lead to increased fuel consumption and rapidly reduced engine life, and at worst, the need for an immediate overhaul;
  • reduced corrosion resistance;
  • clogged oil passages - this occurs due to the build-up of fuel combustion products inside the engine, which over time simply clog the oil passages.

How often should you change the oil

Changing your oil on time is extremely important, but what should the change interval be so you don't miss an important milestone and pay too much? To find out the change interval, you need to take a look at your vehicle's owner's manual and find out. As a rule, the frequency also takes into account the operating conditions of the vehicle, which is why recommendations vary from country to country for the same model. Most often the oil should be changed every 10,000 km, although some models can run for up to 20,000 km without a change. But it's still better to play it safe and change it at 10,000 km - this will significantly extend the service life.
