When it comes to engine oils, questions often arise that not everyone knows the answer to. In order to keep your car running smoothly, you need to be familiar with the specifics of engine oils and their proper use. Tsaki has prepared the most frequently asked questions about engine oils that will help you take proper care of your vehicle.
Oil should be changed in accordance with the vehicle's owner's manual. The engine manufacturer is the only one who can determine this. At the same time, it is based on the possibility of using oils whose quality meets the minimum requirements of the relevant specifications. A certain mileage or time interval is usually recommended. Under adverse conditions (a list of which can be found in the instructions), the oil should be changed more frequently.
The guaranteed shelf life of engine oils is 5 years. Its date of manufacture can usually be found on the bottom of the packaging. However, there are cases where the date on the can is the date of manufacture of the can and not the date of the oil spill. Usually the time between the production of the oil and its sale does not exceed one year. It must be remembered, however, that the period of storage of oil and the standing of a car without mileage for the same period with oil poured into it are not the same thing. Being in the engine lubrication system, the oil comes into contact with the environment and oxidises. Therefore, even if you haven't used the car, you should change the engine oil at least once every six months.
During engine operation, products of incomplete fuel combustion, in other words, soot, build up in the engine. The lower the fuel quality and the higher the fuel consumption, the worse the engine operating conditions. No matter how good the engine oil is, it cannot withstand 100% of the high temperatures in the engine and partially oxidises and decomposes. The oxidation products are dark, resinous substances. Good oil, due to the presence of effective additives in it, retains both the decomposition/oxidation products and soot in volume, keeping the internal engine surfaces clean, protecting them from varnish and carbon deposits. This explains the dark colour of the oil.
It may seem that all oils belonging to the same API or ACEA category are the same, but in fact they are not. For example, an oil that meets today's highest quality category, whether for a petrol or diesel engine, can only be considered as such after it has passed a full series of engine tests. Some oils only meet the minimum requirements. Others may be significantly better because they contain more effective additives. Accordingly, such products fall into the elite price category. They provide extremely reliable engine protection and longer vehicle life.
