LED vs halogen: the future of automotive lighting | ТСАКИ ООД

LED vs halogen: the future of automotive lighting

Lighting is an important element not only for the appearance of the car, but also for road safety. Over the years, automotive lighting technology has evolved, and with the creation of LED and halogen lamps, a debate has emerged as to which of these technologies is better suited to the cars of the future.

What are LED and halogen lamps?

Light is essential to human life. For many years, mankind has been looking for ways to modify, control and use light, especially in vehicles. Thus, various automotive lighting technologies have emerged, with LED and halogen lamps being two of the most popular in the modern world.

LED lamps

LED is a technology that uses semiconductor diodes to produce light. When an electric current is passed through them, they emit light. Main features of LED lamps:

  • Energy efficiency - LED lamps are extremely energy efficient. They convert almost all of the incoming energy into light, which significantly reduces waste;
  • long life - due to their construction and way of working, LED lamps can last a very long time before burning out or losing their brightness;
  • size and shape - LEDs are very small, allowing for compact and stylish headlamp designs.

Halogen lamps

Halogen lamps are an evolution of traditional incandescent lamps. The main difference is that they use halogen gas in their glass bulb, which increases their efficiency and lifespan. Here are some basic features:

  • brightness - halogen lamps produce brighter light, compared to conventional lamps, for the same energy consumption;
  • heat - as halogen lamps still convert some of the electrical energy into heat, they can get quite hot during operation;
  • cost - due to their simpler structure, they are generally cheaper than LED models.

Both technologies offer different advantages. While LED lamps are more efficient and long-lasting, halogen lamps are more affordable and easy to replace.

Comparison between LED and halogen

When choosing lighting for a car, many hesitate between LED and halogen lamps. To help with this decision, the experts at Tsaki have prepared a detailed comparison between the two technologies:

1.Energy Efficiency

  • LED: convert almost all of their energy consumption into light, which means minimal heat loss and lower electricity consumption;
  • Halogen: although more efficient than standard incandescent lamps, they still convert a significant portion of their energy into heat.

2.Life

  • LED: typically last between 25 000 and 50 000 hours, which can equate to several years of use in a car;
  • Halogen: their average life varies between 1 000 and 2 000 hours, which requires more frequent replacement.

3.Brightness and light quality

  • LED: provide a stable and bright light output with the possibility of adjusting the intensity and tones of light;
  • Halogen: produce warm and even light, but over time and decreasing lifetime, the intensity may decrease.

4.Price and availability

  • LED: were initially expensive, but as technology has developed and their popularity has increased, their prices have become more affordable. However, they are still more expensive than halogen lamps;
  • Halogen: are generally cheaper than LED and are more widespread.

5.Operating temperature

  • LED: due to their high energy efficiency, LED lamps generate less heat during operation but still require cooling systems, especially in heavy use;
  • Halogen: they generate more heat, which can lead to overheating in prolonged use without sufficient ventilation.

Overall, both technologies have their strengths and weaknesses, and the choice between them depends on the specific needs and preferences of the user.

The future of automotive lighting

With the development of technology and the decreasing prices of LED lamps, the trend is for them to become standard in the automotive industry. In addition to better energy efficiency and longer life, LED technology allows manufacturers to experiment with headlamp design as LEDs are much smaller and flexible than halogen lamps.

At the same time, halogen lamps still have their place on the market, especially in cheaper cars or as spare parts for older models. But LED technology looks like the future of automotive lighting.
