Electric versus traditional internal combustion engines: outlook for 2024 | ТСАКИ ООД

Electric versus traditional internal combustion engines: outlook for 2024

The debate between electric and traditional internal combustion engines (ICEs) is gaining increasing popularity. Faced with global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss and air pollution, consumers and manufacturers are looking for alternative solutions to power vehicles.

Advantages and disadvantages of electric motors

Electric motors offer a number of significant advantages over traditional ICEs that make them an increasingly popular choice among manufacturers and consumers. The most obvious include:

  • Reduced environmental impact - electric vehicles (EVs) emit no harmful emissions into the atmosphere, making them a more preferred choice for environmentally conscious consumers;
  • lower running costs - EVs feature lower maintenance and fuel costs than their counterparts;
  • high efficiency - electric motors convert a higher percentage of electrical energy into motion, making them more efficient than ICEs.

Despite these advantages, there are some disadvantages:

  • limited range - one of the main limitations of EVs is the distance they can travel on a single charge, although battery technology is constantly improving;
  • charging infrastructure - availability and distribution of charging stations remains a challenge in many regions;
  • initial cost - although operating costs are lower, the initial cost of EA can still be higher compared to ICE vehicles.

Traditional internal combustion engines: pros and cons

ICEs have been the dominant powertrain technology for cars since the early 20th century and continue to have a significant presence in the market even in the age of electrification. Their advantages include:

  • Wide range and fast refuelling - ICE vehicles can travel longer distances on a single charge and refuelling stations are widespread and convenient to use;
  • technological maturity - ICEs are well developed, with a wide variety of options to suit all tastes and budgets;
  • cost - although the price gap is narrowing, ICE vehicles are often more affordable than EA.

However, disadvantages of ICEs include:

  • high emissions - ICEs produce significant amounts of CO2 and other pollutants that contribute to climate change and air pollution;
  • fuel and maintenance costs - ICEs require regular servicing and fuel costs are dependent on oil price fluctuations.

Electrification of transport

The outlook for 2024 points to a rapidly increasing share of EA in the automotive market. Several key factors will be decisive for this transformation:

  • Improvements in battery technology - battery technology is expected to continue to evolve, leading to longer ranges and shorter charging times;
  • expanding charging infrastructure - investment in charging infrastructure will make EVs more convenient for everyday use;
  • political and economic incentives - governments around the world are introducing incentives to buy EAs and restrictions on ICEs to encourage a shift to cleaner transport.

While traditional internal combustion engines still have their place in the transport ecosystem, EVs are emerging as a key player in the future of sustainable transport. With increasing technological innovation and political support, 2024 could be a pivotal point in the transition to greener transport solutions.
